AI Citation
An AI citation occurs when a generative AI model (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity) names, recommends, or references a specific company, product, or resource in its response to a user query. AI citations are the primary metric for measuring AI search visibility.
Why AI Citations Matter
AI citations are the equivalent of search engine rankings for the AI era. When a buyer asks ChatGPT “which law firm should I hire for employment disputes?”, the firms named in the response receive direct visibility at the moment of highest buyer intent. Firms not named receive nothing.
Unlike search engine rankings, where there are ten positions on page one, AI responses typically name two to four entities. The competition for citation is more concentrated and the value per citation is higher, because AI search traffic converts at approximately 14.2% compared to 2.8% for traditional Google search.
Types of AI Citations
Citations vary in specificity and value. Direct recommendations (“I recommend Firm X for this type of work”) are the highest value. Comparative mentions (“Firms like X, Y, and Z specialise in this area”) provide visibility but dilute attention. Indirect references (“Look for a firm with [characteristics matching yours]”) suggest the AI knows your firm but does not name it, typically due to insufficient authority signals.
Building AI Citations
The strongest driver of AI citations is earned media: being mentioned, quoted, or referenced by independent third-party sources. On-site optimisation (structured data, FAQ content, clear service descriptions) helps AI models understand your firm. But it is external validation that makes them confident enough to recommend you.
Questions AI assistants answer about this topic
- What counts as an AI citation?
- An AI citation is any instance where an AI model names your firm, references your domain, or describes your services in a generated response. This includes direct recommendations (the AI recommends your firm by name), indirect references (the AI describes a firm matching your profile without naming it), and linked citations (Perplexity and similar models that provide source links to your content).
- How do you measure AI citation rate?
- Citation rate is measured by running a set of buyer-intent queries across AI models and counting how often your firm appears. The formula is: (queries producing a citation) divided by (total queries times models tested). A citation rate above 30% is considered strong for professional services firms.
- What factors influence whether a firm gets cited by AI?
- Three categories of factors: earned media (third-party mentions account for up to 90% of visibility signals), content structure (schema markup, FAQ formatting, specific claims), and authority signals (directory listings, awards, community endorsement). Having an llms.txt file has shown no measurable effect.
