Definition

Structured data is standardised code added to web pages, typically using Schema.org vocabulary in JSON-LD format, that explicitly describes page content to search engines and AI models. It turns implicit information into machine-readable labels, enabling richer search results, knowledge graph entries, and more accurate AI-generated answers.

What Structured Data Does

Every web page contains information, but that information is presented in human-readable formats that machines must interpret. Structured data eliminates the interpretation step by providing explicit, standardised labels. Instead of a machine guessing that “Jay Kalam” is an author name based on its position on the page, structured data states it directly: this is a Person entity, with the role of author.

Schema.org and JSON-LD

Schema.org is the vocabulary, and JSON-LD is the syntax. Schema.org defines hundreds of entity types and properties: Organization, Person, Article, FAQPage, Service, Product, and many more. JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is the encoding format that embeds this vocabulary into web pages as a script block.

The combination has become the dominant standard. Google, Bing, and AI model training pipelines all parse JSON-LD structured data when crawling websites.
